Peyronie's Disease
Treatment For Curvature Of The Penis
Peyronie's disease, or Peyronie's syndrome is a curvature of the penis that occurs during an erection. It is often painful and can cause inflamation and scar tissue. Peyronie's is not a hereditary defect from birth, it is usually acquired and effects men approaching middleage. Although a male can be born with a slight curve in the penis this is not normally Peyronie's disease.
How Common Is Peyronie's Disease
It is estimated that Peyronie's disease affects approximately 4% of the male population and usually later in life. These figures are not acurate due to the sensative nature of the issue many men often avoid seeking treatment and so detailed analysis is difficult.
Symptoms Of Peyronie's Disease
The affliction can vary from a slight almost unnoticeable bend to a severe curve measure up to 45%. The penis can often change shape and alter in size both in length and diameter. A lump can sometimes be detected on the side of the penis from where the curving starts This can be a very traumatic experience for the sufferer.
Causes Of Peyronie's Disease
There is not an abundance of information surrounding the disease itself but it is thought the curve in the penis is caused by trauma to the tissue wall of the corpora cavernosa. The corpora cavernosa is the chamber that runs along the length of the penis and fills with blood when in an erect state. The elasticity in the tissue is affected and so blood cannot fill the chambers to capacity causing the penis to expand less on one side. The tissue damage then appears to form into a lump, this is a build up fibrous plaque.
Treatments For Peyronie's Disease
Nowadays Peyronie's is not a condition that has to be suffered indefinately, there are treatments available; some drastic and not to be recommended and some not so drastic that require simple application or vitamins.
Surgery
The most drastic and the most likely to cause complications. Surgery should be a last resort treatment and only for conditions that are extremely severe. There does not appear to be high success rate with surgical procedures involving the penis. It is estimated that over 50% of men who have had corrective surgery on their greatest asset have not been satisfied with the results. There are many instances where the patient has lost sensitivity in their penis and many other cases where impotency has been a direct result of surgery. Permenant damage is high risk factor. Surgery is not recommended.
Traction Device
A penile traction device is the most likely not only to straighten the defect but improve the appearance of the penis. A traction or stretching device exercises the penis and surrounding penis tissue allowing blood to flow more evenly into the corpora cavernosa and increasing capacity.
It is a sad fact the majority of Peyronie's suffers do not realise that there are effective treatments available, couple this with the rather embarrasing nature of the problem means that a high percentage of men will never experience the relief of penile correction.
Traction devices are extremely affordable, discreet and simplistic in application. The success rate for correcting a bend or curve is around 70%. There is no need to suffer the discomfort, embarrassment and pyschological issues that a penile curvature can cause.
